The 2012 Trailer : End of the World

From Director Roland Emmerich (The Day after tomorrow, Independance Day, Godzilla)

No Country for Old Men, American Gangster, Atonement, Hitman, We Own the Night

No Country for Old Men

Here are five films that I saw recently, and as usual I set my scores between 6 and 9.5/10. Below I will not mention them, or, if not…then that means I didn’t see them. It happens ; -)

And as usual, this is my personal opinion only. You may agree or disagree. Express yourself in the comments section.

My Panasonic wireless sound home theater system is quite nice, but I am not very sure about my 32-inch LCD TV. Too small. In fact, I preferred my big 48-inch projection TV I had 2 years ago. I would willingly sacrifice image quality to size now that I have a good sound system. OK, that’s enough. I will wait, that’s all.

No Country for Old Men 8/10

Frankly, regarding the style of the film itself, I like it at 100%. I love it. One recognizes the Coen brothers’ style, in that it is similar to “Fargo“. It takes place in America in the vast, deep desert (Texas) and shows the inevitable imbalances that can arise between money and social differences. Javier Bardem plays a really fascinating character, with a haircut no one can compete with.

In my opinion, this film deserves its 4 Oscars: Best Film, Best Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay. I think the end is rather abrupt…but it doesn’t matter. Here we do not have a story with a beginning and an end, but a piece of living, regional history.

Note: that this film is No Movie for younger audiences, due to its violence.

American Gangster 7.5/10

This is a very good movie, inspired by the true story of Frank Lucas. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s excellent. Denzel Washington plays the character very well, as usual.

Atonement 7/10

The trailer was so good that it raised the expectations of the film, leaving one to expect excellence. But it was deceiving ; I never saw excellence. What a disappointment. I expected a masterpiece, and I just saw a movie. British films are usually better than this, to me. It was quite the same style of movie as the 1993 “Remains of the Day” which borders on excellence. About Atonement, my rating fluctuates between 4/10 and 8/10, depending on certain sequences in the film.

Hitman 7/10

I was pleasantly surprised. I expected an unpretentious action movie, not so credible. But the final result was really fun. Inspired by the video game “Hitman: Contracts“, it’s a little like a Jason Bourne movie. Yet in contrast, the actor who plays Hitman is not as good as Matt Damon. It is just a different style. Bold as Bruce Willis but not as much virility as Bruce himself.

We Own the Night 6.5/10

What can I say? I like the script and the story, but the actors’ interpretation did very little for me. The parts played by Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg were not very convincing. Likewise for the police parts in the film.

Jessica Simpson Blonde Ambition is a flop

jessica-simpson-blonde-ambition

Jessica Simpson’s movie Blonde Ambition was a flop for its release this week end in Theatres.

The movie was released on 8 screens in Jessica’s State of Texas. Numbers are pretty scary: an average of $48 per screen on friday for a big total of $384. At 8$ the ticket that means that 6 people paid to see the movie in each theatre!!

And that’s a total of 48 people who saw Blonde Ambition. It is considered as one of the worse scores ever for the Cinema Industry.

The film should be already in DVD format next month, january 22th!

Ok Jessica, may be the DVD release will be better 🙂

France is going to punish P2P download

Denis Olivennes

A report from Denis Olivennes, CEO of Fnac.com has been signed this Friday by the french government of Nicolas Sarkozy.

The pact was signed between french government and about 40 associations from Music, Cinema, Television and Internet Service Providers (ISP). However this agreement has been very criticised by french Assembly.

Among the artists who support Olivennes Friday: Thomas Fersen, Patrick Bruel, Calogero, Didier Barbelivien, Jean Reno et Christian Clavier.

Internet users are just starting to discuss about this agreement and it is going to be huge in the blogosphere and medias.

Denis Olivennes : “[…] J’ajoute qu’en l’occurrence, il est précisément question de tout sauf de prison ! Suspendre l’abonnement après trois avertissements, ce n’est ni une condamnation, ni une amende ni une peine de prison […]”
(translation: “It is everything but jail. Suspend internet access after three warnings is not a conviction, a ticket or jail”)

The pact plans to send a notice to the internet user after three P2P downloads. If the user does it again, he won’t have access to internet (done by ISP) and he could be put on a blacklist.

So the internet user won’t be able to connect to the internet!

Sarkozy said: « J’avais pris des engagements sur le droit d’auteur avant les élections. Chaque artiste doit voir son travail rémunéré, je ne transigerai pas sur ce point. »
(translation: “I took the pledge on copyrights before the elections. Every artist should see his work paid. I won’t compromise over this.”)

And : “We run the risk of witnessing a genuine destruction of culture”

“The Internet must not become a high-tech Far West, a lawless zone where outlaws can pillage works with abandon or, worse, trade in them in total impunity. And on whose backs? On artists’ backs” he said.

But currently the law is not applied and even if it’s applied one day, we are going to see other alternatives for illegal music and movies downloading.

And besides how could the independent authority technically detect automatically the P2P downloads ?

And what about the prices in France if a lot of people P2P download ?

Here in Canada I pay CAD$ 3.99 to rent a DVD. When I was in France in the previous months it was about CAD$6.75 (4.50€).
And it’s the same for CD. It’s about 30% more expensive in France than in Canada.

May be a drop in prices could help a little the entire industry?

Comment: The man who said “I’d rather be lucky than good” saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It’s scary to think so much is out of one’s control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a litte luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn’t, and you lose.
