A meteor is a rock that passes close to the Earth. A meteorite is when a rock passes close to the Earth, is pulled in by gravity, and hits the Earth. An asteroid is one of the many rocks that orbit the sun.
This is utter, complete horseshit. The 2012 date is the end of the Mayan calendar, and of course plenty of people have come up with various theories about how the world will end when that time arrives. Some idiot has found this old, ridiculously overplayed rendering of an asteroid collision and for some reason put it together with the mayan apocalypse idea, but fails to explain how these two different concepts are in any way related.
In reality, we stand a far greater chance of destroying ourselves by 2012 than having an asteroid do it for us.
